Avila is fully surrounded by well-preserved walls that date back to the eleventh century. These walls are actually one of the most important European relics in Spain. The City Walls or Las Murallas as they are called are a very popular tourist attraction in this Spanish city. Interestingly, they took a full nine months to complete. It is also a symbol of Avila and one the best-kept monuments in all of Europe. The Avila Cathedral is another source of pride for the city. This cathedral was built between the twelfth and fourteenth century and contains various sculptures and paintings dating from the year 1571. Another fantastic site in this city is called the Palacio de los Deanes or The Deanes’ Palace. It is home to the Provincial Museum and features regional archaeological discoveries like blessed sculptures from the Romanesque up to the Renaissance periods. The Los Cuatro Postes or The Four Posts is yet another tourist spot that you can find in Avila. You will find a four-pillar monument here, marking the place where St. Therese and her brother were thwarted in their effort to attain martyrdom. On the way to this monument, you will be treated to a panoramic sight of the city from the hills.
